Pupils from Edington & Shapwick School raised an impressive £250 during a non-uniform day on Tuesday 18th November in aid of spinal injury research. Each pupil paid £1 to leave their school uniform at home, and enjoyed meeting Colin Javens, who was paralysed from the neck down after a diving accident eight years ago when he was just 20 years of age.
Colin is determined to not let his disability get in the way of life and after completing his degree Colin fulfilled his life-long dream of driving from the UK to Cape Town which took a gruelling six months. Colin is now an active fundraiser and set up the Spinal Research West Midlands Branch in 2006.
Mrs Walker’s Year 9 tutor group played host to Colin and handed over the money on behalf of the school. Colin is very inspirational and advocates ‘living your dream’ despite any challenges caused by a disability etc. and pupils from the specialist school for dyslexia shared their personal dreams with Colin and listened to his remarkable traveller’ tales.
Mrs Walker commented “I would like to thank Colin for visiting Edington & Shapwick School. The pupils found Colin’s story inspiring and helped them understand that their dyslexia does not need to get in the way of them achieving their dreams”.
Colin began the day with a visit to Edington School to meet the pupils who are all aged 8 – 13 years, and then went onto Shapwick School and met each of the year groups.
